Exchange Project
Funded by a SSHRC Research Creation grant, Exchange is a large scale performative inquiry that was sparked in response to the growing ideology of fear and fortification after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Revolving around the activity of free trade of personal belongings and narrative histories of the traded objects, Exchange inspires strangers to connect with each other meaningfully and without fear. |
During the 4 month extended performance in 2006, I drove a commercial transport truck ~30,000 km in a near circumnavigation of Canada and the United States (with separate events in Mexico and Argentina). Rather than economic parity, the value of the trades was in their narrative content. In a time (that has once again returned ) when many countries were increasing fortifications to ‘protect’ citizens from dangerous strangers, I was interested in breaking down barriers and creating temporary communities of personal connection, and solidarity. |
